Epistle #104 Friday Update: Worship, Semi-Annual Meeting, and More!

1. Join us for in-house worship this Sunday, October 18, at either 8 a.m. or 10:00 a.m. Our guest speaker will be Jacque Mohs. Our scripture readings for this week include Matthew 22:15-22. Below you will find a devotion based on that Scripture:
“Some time ago, I was at a stewardship event where the speaker drew two overlapping circles on a piece of newsprint. Over one circle he wrote, “Things that belong to us,” and asked us to list things that were ours. We shouted out the usual things: homes, cars, bank accounts, possessions. Over the second circle the presenter wrote, “Things that belong to God.” Again, he asked us to list what belonged in the circle. After an awkward silence someone said hesitantly, “Everything?” The speaker agreed, responding, “The stewardship question is not how much of what is ours we give to God but how much of what is God’s we keep for ourselves.”
The Pharisees hoped to trap Jesus into saying something that would get him in trouble with either the emperor or the crowds. Instead, he reminded them of the basic truth that everything is God’s. The real stewardship question is, “What are we going to do with everything God has given us to manage on God’s behalf?”
