Devotions from God Pause: The reformers of the church lived, and died, for this truth: We are saved, justified, forgiven of our sins by grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone. As Scripture says, all this for the glory of God alone. For many years I considered these as separate steps in a process. I learned to sing “Jesus loves me” before I could even read the Bible. Now, in my senior years, I view these five “alones” (“solas”), not as separate steps, or even as connected links in a chain. They are all one big gracious gift from God to sinful persons—graciously including me and all humanity. Martin Luther wrote: “When faith performs its proper office, it looks to absolutely nothing except Jesus Christ the Son of God, given for the sins of the whole world.” Faith in what Jesus has done—that is the ground of our assurance!
