Here is a devotion from God Pause: In our day, following Jesus is often seen as an internal matter, involving primarily our minds, our hearts, and perhaps some behaviors. For the disciples, it meant literally changing their lives. They left their jobs and homes and hit the road. Following Jesus can still mean changing one’s whole life. Some seminarians leave their jobs and homes, moving to follow Jesus. Followers often still make other major life changes, doing so out of a sense of calling. One might expect that everything would turn out great when such actions are taken. It did not work that way for the disciples, and it does not necessarily work that way for us. Changes are disruptive, our journeys can be difficult, and things do not always work out as we had expected. Following Jesus does not change that reality. However, Jesus invites us to take on the challenges that fit us and promises to be with us come what may. Congregational Vitality Survey. As part of our transition process in calling a new pastor, we ask that you participate in a Church Vitality Survey. The purpose of this survey is to gather your input to inform planning for St. Paul’s future. The survey is open to everyone, including youth. Special Meeting of the Congregation. A special meeting of the congregation will be held immediately following worship on January 22. The Council will present constitutional changes, which require two votes, as well as nominate the Call Committee. Your attendance (quorum of 25 ) and your votes on these important matters is vital to St. Paul.
Constitution Announcement: The Congregation Council presents to you proposed changes to our Constitution, which will be voted upon January 22 at a special meeting and ratified February 26 at the annual meeting of the congregation. Your attention to this document, as well as your attendance at the meetings, are much appreciated. Much thanks goes to Leon Schwartz for all his work on our Constitution. Please do not hesitate to contact Council members Jacque Mohs, Ann Bartelt, Dave Stewart, Ted Leonard, Cheryl Young, Rana Scarlet, Tom Acton, Beth Sunds, and Mark Hollingsworth with your questions.
Here is a summary of the changes:A vast majority of the changes are in the wording to bring our Constitution in alignment with the Synod Model Constitution. These updates in language and Synod policy are made every three years. Because these changes are from the Model Constitution, they need only one vote to be adopted.
The Council recommends that we adopt Synod language for C10.01, which states we will have one regular meeting a year. This is consistent with the laws of the State of Iowa. Related to this change, note that in C12.09, the Congregation Council shall submit a comprehensive report to this congregation at least twice a year, including at the annual meeting. This change requires two votes by the congregation.
A second change recommended by the Council occurs in C12.05, increasing the authority of the Council to enter into contracts of up to $10,000 from $3,000 for items not included in the budget. As costs for such things as the HVAC system have become more expensive, this change will allow the Council to provide for our immediate needs. This change requires two votes by the congregation.

Transition Update. We are grateful for the leadership of Leon Schwartz and those who attended the training last Sunday; this was an important step in the vitality and health of our congregation. In a next step, Pastor Dan Kuckuck will be with us Sunday, January 29, for worship, fellowship, and meeting with the Call Committee. Pastor Dan serves as an Assistant to the Bishop and manages the areas of mobility and call process and rostered minister leadership
The regular annual meeting will be held February 26 following worship. At that meeting, Council and Committee elections will be held, constitutional changes will be ratified, and year-end reports will be given. Your attendance is appreciated at these congregational meetings.
SE Iowa Synod Mission Report. The 2022 Mission Spending Annual Report from our Synod is now available. The report is intended to help us see, at a glance, the impact of our congregation’s mission support from 2022. St. Paul’s Mission Support represents about 4.5% of our total budget. Adult Faith Fellowship. 2nd half of The Chosen. You are invited to join Adult Faith Fellowship Sunday evenings at 5:00 p.m. for four weeks, beginning January 8th through January 29th. In 2022 about 24 of us watched the first four episodes of The Chosen together. In January we will watch the last four episodes (one per week) followed by a light meal and guided small group discussions. All are welcome. If you haven’t seen the first 4 episodes we highly recommend you download the Chosen app (it’s free) and watch them before you join us for the last 4 episodes. Wednesday God Squad and Confirmation. Both God Squad (4 years-6th graders) and Confirmation (7-8th graders) meet Wednesday evenings for a free meal, followed by the program and activity from 6:00-7:00pm. We thank and are very grateful for our volunteer teachers and youth helpers. The last Wednesday for classes will be April 12. Confirmation Sunday will be April 16.
Lutheran Study Bibles. There are extra Lutheran Study Bibles for sale at $36.00 each if anyone is interested in purchasing one.
Wednesday God Squad and Confirmation. Both God Squad (4 years-6th graders) and Confirmation (7-8th graders) began on September 14, as scheduled. Children and youth are welcome to join at any time. The free meal for God Squad and Confirmation begins at 5:40, followed by the program and activity from 6:00-7:00 pm. Meal donations, both monetary and food, are gladly accepted. Youth Committee: The newly formed Luther League, Grades 5th through 12th, will have opportunities to grow together as a group, have some fun, and share memories made together. Suggestions and questions may be addressed to Clarice Blanchard and Ted Leonard. Please watch for future youth events.
| Matura Food Pantry: Our offering to the Matura Food Pantry is blessed the first Sunday of each month. Help us fill the shopping cart will non-perishable food, diapers, and even pet food. Checks made out to Matura Madison County or cash are also accepted. St. Paul’s Trust Fund: The Trust Fund committee, elected by the congregation, supports mission projects ranging from national and international disaster relief, congregants’ mission trips, and camping scholarships for youth and children. Please contact Chair Dick Anderson with any questions or suggestions for mission support at REAND0508@aol.com Furniture Ministry: St. Paul collects and gives home goods, furniture, and appliances to those in need. Contact Lisa Vossekuil (920-979-0304 or levossekuil@gmail.com) about any donations. Monetary gifts are also appreciated for our storage units. The Furniture Ministry needs able bodies to help with picking up and delivering furniture on a Saturday morning (usually 9;00 – 10:00 a.m.). Pool of Siloam: Pool of Siloam is St. Paul’s local benevolence program that provides monetary support for those in need of such things as gas money or car repair, rent or mortgage assistance, and utility bills. In partnership with local agencies (CRISP, Matura, and Crisis Intervention), we annually serve over 100 individuals, including children. All giving to the Pool of Siloam is matched by an anonymous donor. Offerings to this program can be indicated on your giving envelope or online giving form. LifeServe Blood Drive: St. Paul hosts the community LifeServe Blood Drive every fourth Tuesday of the month. We are known for our home-baked goods and appreciate your donations of cookies and bars. Please bring them to the church by noon the day of the drive. January 24, 2023 is the next scheduled blood drive. Call for Cookies. Cookies are always needed for Sunday morning services and the monthly blood drive. They can be store bought or home-made. |
| Pastor Lisa Klein Goodwin. Former Pastor Lisa Klein Goodwin passed away January 4, 2023. She served as St. Paul’s pastor 1989-1993. We ask for your prayers for her husband Stephen (Bloomington, IL) and her family. Her obituary can be viewed at this link. He needs to be picked up no later than 9:40 a.m. at North Ward, 415 N. 2nd Street, Winterset, at the south door of the east building. Pick-up is at 2:30 p.m. at the Fresenius Kidney Care.
