Paul appeals to the Corinthians to contribute to the collection for the relief of the Jerusalem church, some of whose members have fallen into poverty. I have participated in many stewardship campaigns. Few occasions put one more in touch with the nuts and bolts concerns of church life—keeping the lights on, keeping the doors open. Yet Paul does not hesitate to draw a direct connection between such concerns and the ultimate sacrifice of Christ himself, who “though he was rich, yet for your sakes became poor.” It’s good to be reminded that simple acts of service, such as keeping the doors open, are also acts of hospitality toward all who would enter through those doors to hear the good news.

Sunday Bible Study:  Bible Study will meet at 11:00 a.m. following morning worship in the front most classroom near the church office. During the class, we invite questions, comments, and connections, as we expand upon the readings from the worship service. 

Larger Bulletins & Kids Bags: The ushers will have large print bulletins available.  St. Paul has kids’ bags to engage your child during church.  They are hanging on hooks by the entry doors or see the ushers.

Outdoor Trash Cans Needed for Ragbrai. We could use about a dozen outdoor trash cans for the camp grounds around the church for Ragbrai. Please bring them to the church by Monday, July 22, leaving them at the back door. Please label your can with your name. They can be picked up the afternoon of Wednesday 7/24 or later. Thank you! 

Part-Time Musician.  St Paul is looking for a part-time musician to provide accompaniment for worship services. This would require playing for church service probably once a month on the piano or guitar, if you are interested, please contact Pastor Heidi or Beth Sunds.

Community Worship Service July 7. Community Worship Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. July 7 at the north lawn of the Madison County Historical Society. Please plan to arrive early for parking; space is available on the street, the WEST hospital parking lot, and the high school parking lots. A shuttle will be available from the high school lot. Those joining the ecumenical choir should arrive by 9:30 am for a brief practice. A potluck will follow the service. Meat from the Pork Producers will be furnished, as will table service and drinks. Please bring a covered dish to share and lawn chairs. Note that electrical outlets will not be available.  The offering will go to the Ryan and Mandy Gainuss family who lost their home in the 2022 Winterset tornado. They have been living in a shed on their property since then.  Checks may be made to Foursquare Church to go to the “I Helped Gainuss a House” fund. The service is sponsored by St. Paul, 1st United Methodist, 1st Presbyterian, 1st Christian, and Foursquare Churches. 

Capital Campaign. “A little over a year ago, St Paul kicked off the second (and final) phase of our capital campaign. The goal continued to be the complete elimination of our church debt. The initial campaign started in 2017 and ran 3 years. We raised nearly $400,000 from that effort. The second campaign’s goal was $70,000 and we have pledges right at that amount. Many thanks to all members, past and present that have supported the campaign. To date, we have received over $55,000 of the pledges. I anticipate that we will be celebrating the complete elimination of our debt later this year. We have already paid our mortgage in full, and have fully repaid the trust fund loan. The last amount is owed to the fellowship (kitchen crew) loan. Your quarterly giving statements will show how much you have pledged and how much you have paid towards the capital campaign. Please note that and we thank you in advance for your generosity to St Paul. If you are a newer member, it is not too late to help us get to the finish line! As our church looks forward to calling a new pastor, our finances our in excellent shape to grow our ministry!”

St. Paul to Host Pork Belly Ventures during Ragbrai.  In a joint effort with our neighbor St. Joseph Catholic Church, we will be hosting the Pork Belly Ventures (PBV) Ragbrai group of about 1500 riders and crew members. Both churches will house overnight sleepers, have campers on the grounds, and serve a pasta dinner. PBV is highly experienced in all things Ragbrai; they are self-sufficient with their own portable toilets and showers and pitch in at the host sites. We need your help with hosting the sleepers and preparing and serving the meal.  See Sign-Up Genius and the ushers table for clipboards for how you can help. Riverside Lutheran Bible Camp Sign-up.  Riverside’s many different summer camps are open from March to June.  Make sure to sign up soon because spots go fast!  Sign-up at RIVERSIDELBC.ORG.  The Trust Fund is covering all St. Paul camper’s fee for Riverside Bible Camp.  Riverside LBC provided a code to discount the cost and then bills the Trust Fund after registration closes.  The code is: 24SPL.  We hope your kid(s) will enjoy some quality time this summer, embracing the beauty of God’s creation while fellowshipping with their friends and other campers from across Iowa.  This year’s theme is “I am the vine; you are the branches. Greenfield Community Support. There are several ways to support disaster relief for the community of Greenfield. Cash donations may be made to the Greater Greenfield Community Foundation https://www.greenfieldiafoundation.org/ or Lutheran Disaster Response: https://community.elca.org/lutherandisasterresponse. Also, gift cards to Fareway, Dollar General, and Caseys are welcome. Physical goods are not needed at this time. Please see Kim Patience for more about the gift cards. 
You may also contact Matt Holliday, St. Paul member, who is working closely with the County Emergency Manager to coordinate relief efforts for Greenfield. Matt says, “At this time, the greatest need is for volunteers to assist with various relief activities. We encourage everyone, regardless of age or ability, to consider lending a hand. Transportation Ministry. Transportation ministry is providing rides home mainly for outpatient surgery patients who cannot secure another way home. There is a clipboard in the back of the church if you would like to add your name to the volunteers. The need is occasional but so much appreciated. Questions? Contact Chris Madison (515-468-0051)

Women Infants and Children Services.  WIC will be using St. Paul Church to support local families beginning Thursday, January 25.  This Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides federal grants to states for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age 5 who are found to be at nutritional risk. We welcome these services to our fellowship hall every second and fourth Thursday of the month, from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Matthew 25: Ministries – Pill Bottle Donations. Matthew 25: Ministries is an international relief organization that supports medical missions. We can be a part of this by donating empty plastic pill bottles. All sizes, with plastic lids, are accepted. Please remove all outside labels. Matura Food Pantry: Our offering to the Matura Food Pantry is blessed the first Sunday of each month. Help us fill the shopping cart will non-perishable food, diapers, and even pet food. Checks made out to Matura Madison County or cash are also accepted.
 
St Paul Trust Fund.  The St. Paul Trust Fund was established in 1986 to provide Mission work outside the operational budget of the church. It supports needs locally, nationally and internationally on items such as supplying animals and tools overseas, supporting kids playgrounds to supporting youth summer camps. Furniture Ministry: St. Paul collects and gives home goods, furniture, and appliances to those in need. Contact Lisa Vossekuil (920-979-0304 or levossekuil@gmail.com) about any donations. Monetary gifts are also appreciated for our storage units.  The Furniture Ministry needs able bodies to help with picking up and delivering furniture on a Saturday morning (usually 9;00 – 10:00 a.m.).  Willing workers should contact Lisa (levossekuil@gmail.com) or  jim@nelson.dev.

Pool of Siloam: Pool of Siloam is St. Paul’s local benevolence program for Madison County residents that provides monetary support for those in need of such things as gas money or car repair, rent or mortgage assistance, and utility bills. In partnership with local agencies (CRISP, Matura, and Crisis Intervention), we annually serve over 100 individuals, including children. All giving to the Pool of Siloam is matched by an anonymous donor. Offerings to this program can be indicated on your giving envelope or online giving form. 

LifeServe Blood Drive: St. Paul hosts the community LifeServe Blood Drive every fourth Tuesday of the month. We are known for our home-baked goods and appreciate your donations of cookies and bars. Please bring them to the church by noon the day of the drive July 29, 2024 is the next scheduled blood drive.

Call for Cookies.  Cookies are always needed for Sunday morning services and the monthly blood drive.  They can be store bought or home-made and can be dropped off at anytime.  Jim asks that the cookies for the monthly blood drive be home-made.
Bible Study on First and Third Tuesday of the month at 9:00am.  We will be starting a new study in March.  Everyone is welcome to come to this study at the quilting room / large classroom at the church.  If you are interested, please contact Linda Darling at 515-468-1131 or email ldarling1950@gmail.com

Church Landscaping. The new Landscape project is progressing with the main shrubs, initial grasses and some perennials now in place.  Donated plants may be brought to the church or our house.  Text or Call  me at 515-468- 0383 or email  handythompson@mchsi.com  We will begin a watering schedule 3X weekly soon which people can sign up to help. If you did not sign up, we do have extras available at $5.00 a copy. Call Committee Activity.  Bishop Current’s office has provided us with an easy to follow four step process for use by call committees. The four steps are:
1 Leave-taking – Saying goodbye
2 Preparation – Formation of the call committee, Workshops and Ministry Site Profile.
3 Discernment – Identifying potential candidates, Interviewing candidates, Council recommendation and Call.
4 Walking Together – Installation, Check in at 3-6-12-18 months, One year review

The Call Committee has completed step two and is currently in a season of discernment as we interview candidates. This season may last a few months or longer.  In order to protect the confidentiality of candidates, no specific information can be shared about who is being interviewed or when the interviews are planned. However, once the Call Committee decides on a primary candidate that name is submitted to the Congregational Council, who then makes preparations for a Congregational Meeting. A two-thirds vote of the congregation calls a pastor.

St. Paul Choir. The Choir is always looking for new members.  Choir practice is held Wednesday evenings at 7:10 pm during the months of September-May and sing a couple times each month  during these times at Sunday morning service. Got Time? Got Talent? We Want You! We have a variety of opportunities available where you can showcase an existing talent or pursue an interest you have.  Do you have finance or organizational skills, like to show your concern for others, can teach others, or know your way around building maintenance?  All of these skills can be put to use on various St. Paul committees that need our time and talent. So, if you want to give back to our church, please contact the office and we’ll help find a way you can make a difference!
